Water Jet Laboratory (WJ_Lab)

Water Jet (WJ) technology and Abrasive Water Jet (AWJ) technology exploit the power of pressurized water to machine almost every material. The gentle action of water and abrasive simply erodes the target material without causing significant thermal, chemical or mechanical alterations on the cut part.

Research on WJ/AWJ applications at Politecnico di Milano started more than 15 years ago, thus making the WJ_Lab one of the foremost in the world. The knowledge gained in terms of system monitoring and process control allows the WJ_Lab to address the last technological challenges.

WJ/AWJ is an evolving technology. The research activity focuses on two main themes:

  • Cutting defect reduction in conventional AWJ ( Ø 1.02 - 0.76 mm jet)
  • AWJ miniaturization for fine parts manufacturing ( Ø 0.5 - 0.2 mm jet)

Cooperation with other Laboratories and Departments makes grounded the scientific foundation of all the research outcomes. Nevertheless, WJ_Lab research is in close contact with the actual industrial world, perceiving to the latest needs and offering novel solutions for a wide range of applications. WatAJet S.r.l., a Politecnico di Milano spin-off, always provide the most challenging hints coming from the customers and constitutes the ultimate test board for the innovative devices developed at WJ_Lab.
